November Reflection
What a thrill to see everyone enjoying the festivities of being together as well as celebrating individual expression and fulfilling personal needs.  The routine of the school sessions offers much joy and safety for the busy groups and approaching holidays.  To support the children’s yearn for independence, we are using the “flipping coats” technique when getting ready to play outside. The little rhyme we use is: “tags by the toes, hands by the holes and we flip-it.” We continue to use our deck lanai throughout the class day and thank you parents for layering your children up as well as boots as we enter cooler days!  If your child does not have slippers yet, please bring crocks or other such soft-sole shoe to keep at school so his/her feet stay warm while in class.  If your child talks about wearing socks on his/her hands at school, that is true!  We have a variety of mismatched, clean and new socks we offer children to wear when their hands get cold while playing outside.

December Curriculum Topics
·       Festival of Lights: all holidays around this time have an element celebrating light and we like to highlight the beauty of this sparkling time of year with songs and classroom projects celebrating Hanukah, Diwali, Christmas, Saint Lucia, and Winter Solstice.
·       Festivals: what is a festival and why we hold them.
·       Stars and Evergreen Trees: what is a star.
·       Time of Offering, of Giving: during circle time, using puppets and poems, we will explore what an act of kindness feels and looks like.
Kindness
is more important than wisdom
and the recognition
of this
is the beginning of wisdom.

Reminders, Thank-Yous and Dates to Save
·       WINTER BREAK: NO SCHOOL December 24-January 2
·       We have one opening in our AM class! Thank you for continuing to spread the word to families who might be interested in enrolling.  Ideally we would love to welcome a three-year old girl to the AM mix but do enroll on a first come basis.
·       WEATHER REMINDER: Klahanie School runs with the Vashon School District closures.  Please refer to the Vashon School District website or King5 News for school closure/delays.  Slight variance: If there is a two hour delay reported for Vashon public schools, Klahanie AM class will be canceled and PM class meets.  Teachers will try to call all families about closures. Snow days will not be made up.
·       Thank you Maria Metler and Jeff Adams for wonderful class visits focusing on salmon studies!  What fun!
·       Thank you Tavi Black for the beautiful stone tile donations.
·       Thank you Ginger Hamilton for the large maple leaves we used for our turkey posters.
·       Thank you Anna Pekoz for the November play dough.
·       Thank you for the parent conferences!

2013-2014 Klahanie School Class Specialist

Thank you Jeff from both our PM and AM classes!

2013-2014 Class Specialists:

Jeff Adams is the Kitsap Marine Water Quality Specialist for Washington Sea Grant, a University of Washington-based organization that supports research, outreach and communication to coastal communities. Growing up on farms and National Wildlife Refuges (knee deep in water, mud or nettles) Jeff developed broad connections to the natural world. Degrees in marine and freshwater biology expanded his experience and allowed him to develop expertise in all forms of aquatic life. Jeff now co-coordinates naturalist programs on native plants, watershed stewardship and marine biology. Jeff experience is continually refined by the probing questions and observations of his sons, 4 year old Cisco and 8 year old Carlos. You can follow Jeff's Kitsap Sun reader blog at http://pugetsoundblogs.com/sea-life, follow him on Facebook or Twitter at "salishealife" or email him at jaws@uw.edu or give him a ring at 360-229-9398.

Thank you Maria from both our AM & PM classes!

2013-2014 Klahanie School Classroom Specialists:

Over the past fourteen years she has worked with youth as a ranger with the U.S. Forest Service, an interpreter with The Seattle Aquarium, and as an educator with a number of local non-profits. Maria is excited to bring her passion for sharing the natural world to the Klahanie community.
