April 2012 Newsletter

March Reflection











 Thank you Klahanie parents for coming into class for your Spring observation to witness the magic the children create as well as taking time to share how things are going at home.  We deeply appreciate your time and reflections surrounding your children.  We feel honored to spend time educating and enjoying all these fantastic people!

April Theme Topics

Happy Earth Day to all!  April 22 is this year's Earth Day and we will be focusing on the celebration and love of our earth.  
  • Earth (continents and oceans)
  • Planets in our solar system (we will continue this fun theme/topic into May)
  • Parts of a plant: roots, stem/leaf, corolla, stamen and pistol
  • Plant care (Practical Life lesson on watering plants and caring for the leaves)
Peace Maker: Dr. Wangari Maathai of Keyna.  Dr. Maathai was founder of the Green Belt Movement and Nobel Peace Prize recipient in 2004.  She sadly passed away in 2011 but her mission to plant trees across Keyna to stop erosion and create employment opportunity for disadvantaged women lives on for her country and our greater world.  If you have time, please look at images of Dr. Maathai with your child (please refer to the link attached to this entry: http://greenbeltmovement.org/gallery.php?s=5).  Her face is as bright as the earth-work she created.  Emmy was deeply fortunate to hear Dr. Maathai speak at Benaroya Hall March 17, 2006.  Hearing this lecture series assisted in re-shaping Emmy's own views and practice the importance of environmental education for young children.  We will be honoring Dr. Maathai and celebrating Earth Day by planting three Cypress conifer trees on the property .
