AM and PM Class Outside Exploration

Releasing our Painted Lady Butterflies
An elder PM student offering a lesson to younger classmates!

Planting our Conifer (Evergreen) Cypress Trees in Honor of Earth Day & Dr. Wangari Maathai.

During our month studying Dr. Maathai, during circle we told a children's story based off of her life using small figurines then invited children to use the figurines to re-tell her story during class time.  What a thrill and heart-warming experience to listen to a number to the children (2 from the AM class would repeat this work!) sit quietly re-telling Wangari's moving story of life.

What a delightfully busy month we have experienced together!  Thank you parents for the opportunity to work with and love such amazing young people.

May Topics and Themes
  • We will continue our introduction of planets (Earth and the continents remains the main focus) as well as more songs, poster making and vocabulary introduction of our solar system.
  • With the garden in full growth, we will focus more on our important earth pollinators and how to best support them as they work to help our earth.  Bees, butterflies, moths, flies and hummingbirds-- parts of body, care of our pollinators and their habitat.
  • With the arrival of our Montessori earth puzzle map, we will continue to focus on the earth's continents and oceans.  This gorgeous Montessori material is one of great joy for children and teachers!
  • Our PM Preschool class has been a wonderful space for us to explore what is a disagreement/dispute and introduction to the word and understanding of an assumption vs. inquiry and how one can create a conflict and the other can resolved dispute.  With play-acting as our guide, we teachers act out conflicts and the steps to resolve them.  We will use a modified and age appropriate model of Compassionate Listening/Communication (Marshall Rosenberg's Non-Violet Communication)  to continue this important work of introducing children levels of compassionate inquiry, acceptance and listening with friends.  If parents are interested in learning more about this and how to adapt the model to your own home life, please contact Emmy for more information.
